The Madras High Court bench here closed a contempt petition against the chief secretary after the government on Thursday informed the court that Rs. 7.73 crore has been allocated for construction of additional law chambers in the Madurai court premises.

As many as 84 rooms would be constructed using the fund.

The government also told the bench of justices M Duraiswamy and T Ravindran that the first stage of construction would start soon with the allocation of Rs. 1 crore.

Advocate S M Anantha Murugan had filed a petition in the court in January 2019, seeking directions to authorities to construct additional chambers in the court premises. In April, the court asked the government to construct additional rooms for advocates. But the order was not implemented.

The petitioner then filed a contempt plea against the chief secretary.

On Thursday, the government informed the court that Rs. 7.73 crore has been allocated for construction of additional chambers on the second floor of the court building.
