A division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Chandra Tatia and Justice Alok Singh directed the CID to submit a report in a sealed cover by February 27.
The order came after the deceased's father Saiyad Barkatullah sought handover of the case to the CBI.
He alleged that his son, Sheikh Ansari, died after being beaten up in Kudu police station lockup on May 18, 2012.
Ansari had been was arrested in Lohardaga on the charge of robbery and was on bail.
He was going to court when the police picked him up and took him to Kudu police station in Lohardaga district before beating him to death, the petitioner said.
