On July 19, S Selvakumar, a Deputy Commercial Tax Officer (DCTO), posted in Villupuram district, had used his mobile phone to videograph the proceedings in a case in which he claimed to have interest.
After his action was noticed by some advocates, the phone was seized by the court staff.
Claiming that he had "inadvertently operated his cell phone," the officer, in an affidavit, said he was not aware of the implications of his actions.
However, realising his mistake and to show is repentance, he donated Rs 5,000 to a city old age home and produced the original receipt. He undertook not to repeat such an action.
Directing the Registrar General to keep the seized cell phone in custody till further orders, Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar said in view of the affidavit given by the officer the court would not proceed any further.
However, when the Judge asked whether he had a permit to enter the High Court premises, he replied in the negative. The judge took serious note of it and said it clearly established the non-observance of the court's guidelines in October last regarding its security.
Directing the Assistant Commissioner of Police, incharge of the High Court security arrangements, to file a report in this regard, the Judge posted the matter for hearing to tomorrow.
