A division Bench of Madras High Court today directed Madurai Kamaraj University not to release the final list of candidates selected as Associate Professors and Assistant Professors.
Admitting a petition filed by the Secretary of Madurai Kamaraj University SC/ST Workers Welfare Association M Parthasarathy, Justice R Karuppiah and Justice V S Ravi also directed that no appointment orders be issued.
The petitioner said that MKU had 103 posts as backlog for SCs/STs as per the government's own admission in 2000. Besides, the government had issued specific orders to fill the backlog.
But the notification bringing the posts of Assistant Professors and Associate professors under General Term (GT) category was contrary to law and facts, particularly against the statute of the University, the petitioner contended.
The association alleged that MKU had wifully shown the posts to be filled by GT candidates to expressly avoid appointing SC/ST candidates by way of roster.
Pointing out that the call letters had been dispatched and interviews held till today, it said MKU was in the process of issuing appointment orders before the regular court opened. The academic council's approval had not been got for the appointments and the finance commission had also not given the concurrence, it said.
Hence, government should quash the notification calling for appointments issued on January 22 and fill the post of associate professors and assistant professors by earmarking them to SC/ST, it said.
