Heat breaks 100-year record for Ahmedabad, touches 48 deg C

Heat today broke 100 year record for maximum temperature in the city with mercury touching 48 degrees Celsius, MeT officials said.
As the civic officials confirmed one death due to heat stroke here, director of meteorological centre of the IMD said today was the the "hottest day in the city in the last 100 years".
"The maximum temperature in Ahmedabad city was recorded at 48 degrees Celsius today. It has broken a 100-year record. As per the data, the city had recorded 47.8 degrees Celsius on May 27, 1916," said Jayanta Sarkar, director of meteorological centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Severe heatwave condition continues to prevail across north Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch region.
"The severe heatwave condition will prevail till tomorrow before receding. Westerly wind is likely to bring some moisture which will reduce temperature and offer some respite," Sarkar added.
Apart from Ahmedabad, capital city Gandhinagar, and Deesa in Banaskantha district also recorded maximum temperature of 48 degrees Celsius.
With the death of one person in Ahmedabad today, the total number of heat-related deaths reached four this summer, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said.
As many as 32 heat-related patients were admitted to government hospitals here, it added.
Several other cities in Gujarat recorded over 45 degree Celsius temperature including Kandla (47.7), Surendranagar (47.5), Idar (47.2), Amreli (46.8 degrees), and Rajkot 46 degrees Celsius.
