JNU has become a centre of a nationalism debate in the last two months after three of its students were arrested in a sedition case over an event against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru during which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.
The keenly contested student elections are slated to be held in September, however, various outfits have begun their preparations for the polls for four crucial seats.
Hindu Vidyarthi Sena (HVS) which started its JNU unit in 2013, claims that it has been organising various prayer meetings and havans on campus, the latest being a prayer meeting on Ram Navmi held with an aim of "purifying the JNU campus and eliminating the anti-national elements present there".
"Recently we held an event on Ram Navmi to purify the campus and eliminate the anti-national elements. Though we differ with them in ideology but any left-group has not disrupted any of our events on campus so far," Hindu Sena president Vishnu Gupta said.
Gupta who was arrested in January in connection with the vandalism at Pakistan International Airlines office for allegedly planning the attack said ,"HVS had made its debut in JNU's councillor elections last year by securing one seat. However, this year there are plans to contest for four seats of students union".
