Hollywood mourns Wes Craven's demise

"Scream" stars Courteney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rose McGowan, and filmmaker John Carpenter, among others have paid tribute to legendary Wes Craven, who died after battling brain cancer.
The man behind "Scream" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" passed away on Sunday at his LA home. He was 76.
The celebrities took to Twitter to express their grief.
"Today the world lost a great man, my friend and mentor, Wes Craven. My heart goes out to his family," tweeted Cox, 51.
Gellar said she "had the great privilege of working with #WesCraven one of the kindest most gentle souls, who made great scary films. #RIPWesCraven."

McGowan echoed the sentiment in her own Twitter post which read, "Thank you for being the kindest man, the gentlest man, and one of the smartest men I've known." Hoping that the news wasn't true.

"Please say there's a plot twist." The actress also posted a picture of her and Craven on the set of a film and captioned it, "Shedding tears now. A giant has left us. #wescraven #always #liveon."
Fellow filmmaker Roland Emmerich also paid tribute as writing, "I've always had the deepest respect for @WesCraven and his ability to take his fans on a thrilling ride. Warmest regards to his loved ones."

Paul Feig tweeted, "RIP Wes Craven. You were one of a kind. Thanks for all the years of scares and fun."
Carpenter wrote on Twitter and Facebook.
"My friend Wes has left us too soon. He was truly an Old School director. I had a great time directing him. I'm REALLY gonna miss him," adding, "Devastated to hear the news. Wes was a great friend, fine director and good man. Giant loss. Much too soon."
Kevin Williamson, writer of "Scream" movies, paid tribute to his colleague, "Wes. Such a sweet, special man. So many memories..."
AMC's "The Walking Dead" Twitter handler even honoured the "Scream" movies director by posting, "Taking a break on a show night to pay respects to @WesCraven. LEGEND."

Those who enjoyed Craven's movies also expressed their condolences.
Patton Oswalt wrote, "The hills have 2 less eyes. #RIPWesCraven," referring to Craven's movie "The Hills Have Eyes".
Seth Green tweeted, "Damn guys. @WesCraven died. A brilliant filmmaker, he brought quality & depth of character to every movie he made. Amazing library- bravo."
Actor Josh Gad wrote, "#WesCraven was the maestro of my nightmares growing up throughout the 80's. And those same nightmares gave me my passion 4 horror films. RIP.
