HRD Minister inaugurates month-long workshop on Gujarati dance

With Navratras less than a month away, the capital is gearing up for festivities and 'Garba' is definitely the flavour of the season.
A month-long training workshop for the traditional Gujarati folk dance 'Garba' was inaugurated by HRD Minister Smriti Irani here today.
"This is taking forward Sardar Patel's vision of unity in diversity. I congratulate LokUtsav, Gujarat Education Society and Sardar Patel Vidyalaya for their endeavours to bring unity with their initiative for since the past 10 years", the Minister said.
The workshop has been organised with the support of Gujarat Education Society which runs the prestigious Sardar Patel Vidyalaya.

Pointing that a large number of people in Delhi had love for Gujarati dance forms, Chairman of Gujarat Education Society Jagdeep Bhai Rana called this initiative an opportunity to preserve and popularise the traditional dance.
"It is good to organise such an event. This was started for the non-Gujaratis in Delhi, who've have popularised the dance form. We're doing as much as possible to promote the dance form.

"There are a few dances in India which have become a part of the urban culture. 'Dandiya' is one of them. The dance form though popular, is not performed correctly. So this is an opportunity for the people to learn the traditional dance", he said.

The training is conducted by the Rangmilan group of Gujarat, teaching different forms like 'Garba', 'Dandiyaraas', 'Heench', and 'Teen Tali'. Beginning today, the training ends just in time for the Navaratri celebrations.
A member of LokUtsav said that the lack of any medium to learn and perform the traditional Gujarati dance forms in Delhi led them to begin this initiative.
