The US National Hurricane Centre said Odile's maximum sustained winds had increased to 85 (140 kph) by this afternoon.
Its centre was about 810 kilometers south-southeast of the southern tip of Baja California and moving to the northwest at 7 kph.
Centre forecasters said Odile's movement to the northwest is expected to continue over the next few days. On its current track, the core of Odile will remain well offshore this evening and pass near or southwest the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula tomorrow night.
It was centered 1,735 kilometers east of the northern Leeward Islands and moving northwest at 20 kph.
