CBI today arrested an Indian Audits and Accounts Service (IAAS) officer, posted here, and his relative for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh in return for granting illegal favours to a nursing college.
The IAAS (2005-batch) officer A Paramasivan was held after questioning by CBI and so was his brother-in law Sivaram Tilagar in Chennai in connection with the case, a spokesperson of the investigation agency said.
Paramasivan is posted as a Director in the office of the Director General of Audit, Central Expenditure, in the national capital even as Rs 95 lakh cash has been seized by the agency from the Chennai house of Sivaram Tilagar.
"It was alleged that Paramasivan had demanded an amount of Rs 35 lakhs as bribe for regularising the irregularities of a nursing college being run by the complainant in Chennai and directed the complainant to pay the first instalment of Rs 5 lakh today to his brother-in-law at a designated place in Chennai.
"CBI laid a trap and the brother-in-law of the accused was apprehended while accepting the amount of Rs 5 lakh. Searches are being conducted at the offices and residences of the accused at Delhi, Noida, Kancheepuram and other places near Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu," the spokesperson added.
During searches conducted so far, cash of Rs 95 lakh and several documents have been recovered, the official said.
