Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma Wednesday said improving the education scenario in the state is the priority of the government.

The chief minister, while inaugurating a newly- constructed building of Nongstoin College, said, the state government is also committed to provide better infrastructure and facilities to students.

He also lauded the college for its contribution in imparting higher education since its inception from 1978.

The Rashtriya Uchchatar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA) and Ministry of Development of North East Region (DoNER) funded the construction of the building.

An estimated 4.5 crore was sanctioned by RUSA and DoNER for construction of the building.

The funds were also utilised for development of the college campus and improvement of the college auditorium.

"The education policy is an initiative to address the challenges as well as enhance better infrastructure and facilities. There are several constraints in the education sector," the chief minister said.

"We have embarked on a mission to resolve the problems of the teachers, who are the backbone for our society," he said.

He also said that the state government in its endeavour to ensure equitable development of all region has decided to give special attention and thrust to districts, which are lagging behind.
