'Indian marine engineers preferred for their competency'

Indian marine engineers are employed in a large number on foreign ships because of their competence, an official has said.
"Foreign ship companies prefer Indian engineers because they are competent," said Subodh Prabhu, the docking cell manager of AESM (Anglo-Eastern Ship Management Ltd), Hong Kong.
He was speaking as the Guest of honour at the passing out parade of the Graduate Mechanical Engineers (GMEs) at the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy (AEMA) at Karjat yesterday.
He stressed the need for the students to acquire the best knowledge in shipping line and prove their skills.
M V Newaskar, General Manager, Service Unit South Asia Field Services, Wartsila, said marine engineers should acquire latest skills and make use of it in their services.

The changed scenario in the country offers a lot of opportunities for marine engineers, he said.
AEMA's Principal, Captain Pawan Gupta said ships include the largest and most complex man-made structures on the planet. They operate in harsh environments and carry 90 per cent of the world's trade. Even small ships have a complex structure and many systems for navigation, propulsion and machinery, cargo handling and crew support.
"Anglo-Eastern Group has been the pro-actively involved in training seafarers. Our training centre in Mumbai, Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC), is certified under the Det Norske Veritas quality assurance rules for certification of training centres," he said.
