The number of Indian students studying in Germany has tripled in the past six years, according to the Indian embassy here.
To cater to the nearly 13,740 Indian students studying at German universities, the embassy announced a new portal to ease their transition as well as to engage with them and keep them abreast of opportunities and events.
"Indianstudentsgermany.Org will serve as an extended arm of the mission to reach out to the Indian students; bring the different student organisations in Germany under one umbrella; provide information to Indian students studying or aspiring-to-study in Germany and disseminate information on job opportunities, internships, cultural events, scholarships, accommodation, visa and student related issues," the embassy said in a statement.
The platform has already created a robust network of Indian students and student associations across Germany, who interact and help each other solve "day-to-day problems", it said.
A Sarojini Naidu Award for the best student association has also been set up as part of the initiative.
"The embassy's strenuous efforts with the German government have led to the German authorities continuing the 'extended visa facility' of 180 days for Indian and other students coming to Germany since last year. This was to expire on December 31, 2016, but after considerable deliberations, this facility has been continued to facilitate the settling down process by Indian students among others," the embassy said.
According to the latest statistics by UK government, between July and September 2016, 8,692student visas were granted toIndianapplicants, compared with 8,224 issued during the same period in 2015.
Many UK academics have warned against the sector getting "over-excited" about the "slight upswing" as reports indicate that the UK Home Office wasfinalising plans to cut annual student visa figures by nearly half to manage high immigration numbers.
