Accused Gulshan Kumar, 58, and his nephew Sachin, 35, residents of Hissar in Haryana, were arrested by a team of Special Cell from Shiv Vihar, Nilothi extension, at around 10 pm yesterday, said Sanjiv Yadav, DCP (Special Cell).
Police recovered four dyes for making counterfeit coins of Rs 5 and 113 fake coins of Rs 5, twenty packets of counterfeit Indian coins, each containing 100 coins totalling Rs 20,000 were seized, he said.
Following reports of counterfeit coins being circulated in shopping malls and prominent markets in Delhi and NCR area, the special team was searching for Gulshan and Sachin, main suppliers of counterfeit coins, who hails from Shiv Vihar of Nilothi Extension in Delhi, said the officer.
After their arrest, the special team also raided their rented flat in Vijay Laxmi Park Shiv Vihar and counterfeit coins worth Rs 3,57,565 were recovered.
Another raid at their mint factory in Saha Industrial Area Ambala, Haryana, led to recovery of counterfeit coins worth Rs 82,030 as well as a Poly Sealer machine, portable bag closer and sewing machine from there.
During interrogation, Gulshan said that he ran a dry cleaning shop in Hissar (Haryana) which was gutted in fire in 2013 and he suffered huge losses. In 2014 he came into contact with Ramesh Verma who lured him into supply of counterfeit coins, he said.
He started working with Verma on commission basis and his nephew Sachin also joined him.
Verma also introduced them to Swikaar Luthra, alias Sonu who lived in Uttam Nagar, from whom he got counterfeit coins. He is the mastermind of the counterfeit coin racket and was behind the illegal mint unearthed in Bawana, the officer said.
The duo disclosed that they used iron for making Rs 5 coins and brass for Rs 10 coins.
