The annual international chess competition hosted by Goa has been named after former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar as a tribute to him, the Assembly was informed on Friday.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant made this announcement during a congratulatory motion tabled in the house to hail performance of sportspersons from Goa at national and international levels.
"The annual international chess competition will be held in the name of our late Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who encouraged both education and sports activities.
"It will be called the Manohar Parrikar Open Grandmaster tournament," he told the House.
Parrikar died on March 17 this year.
The tournament, organised by the Goa Chess Association, is currently calledGoa Grandmaster.
This year, it was held in June and the collective winners' prize purse was valued at Rs 53 lakh.
