"Following the allegations (made on a news portal that an officer of Crime Branch took bribes of crores of rupees), I have ordered my DCP to find out the facts," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sadanand Date said today.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Dhananjay Kulkarni will head the probe.
"We will ask the writer (of the report in which the allegations have been made) to provide us evidence or tell the source of information to substantiate his claims. We will also question the officer with regards to the allegations," he said.
The news report has claimed an Inspector of Crime Branch had accepted "crores of rupees" for extending favours to the arrested accused. The officer was also accused of not questioning some bookies who were under the scanner and taking money in lieu of this.
Mumbai Police cracked down on a betting syndicate in May last year and made high profile arrests. They filed a chargesheet against nearly two dozen persons four months later.
