There is a need for amendment to the present IT Act for better policing and execution of cyber crime cases, according to an official of the Kolkata Police's cyber squad.
The amendment would facilitate better investigation into cases registered with the Kolkata Police, cyber department officer-in-charge Siddhartha Chakraborty said at a programme at the MCC Chamber of Commerce here today.
He said that at times they felt helpless in addressing cyber crimes due to limitations they had in resolving an issue or case that needed assistance from other agencies involved and things got worse if the same had cross-border links.
Chakraborty said India has signed the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty with 25 countries.
At the same time he pressed for international cyber law treaty to counter rising cyber crimes across the globe.
There was urgent need to relax the norm that only inspectors and above can investigate a cyber crime to allow more policemen into such crimes, Chakraborty felt.
In 2013, the Kolkata cyber police station had registered 60 cases.
Meanwhile, cyber security expert and ethical hacker Apurba Das Datta said there was lack of awarness and importance which poses threat to cyber security.
