In what could be the largest ever demonstration of yoga, more than 10 lakh cadets of National Cadet Corps (NCC) will simultaneously perform various 'asanas' (postures) at 1,900 locations across the country on the occasion of International Yoga Day on June 21.
"NCC is preparing to organise the largest ever demonstration of yoga by a uniformed organisation on a single day concurrently at multiple venues all across India.
"NCC will achieve this feat on the International Yoga Day (IYD) by participation of more than ten lakh cadets simultaneously at about 1,900 centres across India," a Defence Ministry statement said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing cadets during a NCC rally at Delhi in January this year, had exhorted the cadets to participate in yoga on the Day and create a world record.
The NCC was encouraged by his words and through a coordinated effort aims to achieve this feat. From April to June this year, NCC trained its cadets in yoga over a period of 15 days each for which nearly 2,700 venues across India were utilised while 1,800 instructors were employed, it said.
The task of training over 10 lakh NCC cadets was accomplished by all the 17 NCC Directorates covering all the states and UTs, the statement said.
"This unique record on the IYD will add another feather to the cap of this largest uniformed youth organisation in the world," it added.
India will lead 191 nations to mark the IYD on June 21, highlighted by a mega event here on Rajpath where armed forces, NCC cadets and government officials are scheduled to perform 'asanas'. Around 35,000 persons are expected to take part in the event.
The UN General Assembly had in December last year adopted an India-led resolution, supported by over 175 UN member- states, declaring June 21 as 'International Day of Yoga', recognising that "Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being".
The day will be observed in over 251 cities in 191 countries across the world and the Indian missions and diplomatic posts have made arrangements for the celebrations.
