After his remarks praising Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed today came in for criticism from Congress with the opposition party also charging that the Prime Minister's upcoming visit to the state was nothing but a "political gimmick".
Taking a dig at Sayeed, who leads the PDP-BJP government in the state, the party alsol said it would defeat any move aimed at dividing the people of J-K along regional and religious lines.
"Praising Modi for nothing won't address issues. There is a need for taking measures to maintain the integrity and sovereignty of the state," J-K Congress president and former minister GA Mir told a protest rally in Anantnag town in south Kashmir, 55km from here.
At the protest organised by J-K Youth Congress as part of the 'Akrosh Rally' against "anti-youth and wrong policies" of the PDP-BJP alliance, Mir also made allegations about RSS and "its communal agenda".
"Praising Modi for nothing is like taking orders from RSS and implementing its communal agenda in the state. PDP has attached much importance to Modi's visit, but can the chief minister clarify the delay in the release of relief package and ignorant behaviour (sic) of Modi towards the state?" he said.
He also referred to the controversy over claims of "rising intolerance" in the country and asked whether Sayeed can "clarify the silence of Modi" on the issue. Mir further claimed that the NDA government was giving a "free hand to disgruntled and anti-peace elements" to undermine communal harmony.
Terming the Prime Minister's upcoming visit to the state a "high political drama" by PDP-BJP coalition, the PCC chief said that "the much-talked-about visit is nothing but a mere political gimmick in the name of announcing a package".
Seeking clarity from the state government on the issues confronting the people in all the three regions of J-K, Mir claimed that the people have seen the real face of PDP and are "scared of the ruling dispensation".
"People are not feeling safe under the present government," Mir said while asserting that Congress would defeat any move aimed at dividing the state along regional and religious lines.
Describing today's protest as "warning" to the state government, he said, "Congress will unmask all the forces and factors harming the amity and integrity of the state."
He further claimed that "the ruling alliance has provided an atmosphere of discord to the people, which has alienated them (people) to a great extent".
Sayeed had yesterday came out in support of Modi, saying he is "not at all intolerant" but "all inclusive".
