Sri Lankan government today declined to comment on the conviction of Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa in disproportionate assets case, calling it an internal matter of India.
"Our position is that it is an internal Indian issue which we should not comment on.
"The government has always maintained that our dealings will be limited to the central government of India. We would not respond to provincial governments," Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told reporters.
Jayalalithaa is quite an unpopular figure in Lanka, due to her staunch positions on Lanka-Indo ties in the aftermath of the end of Lankan civil war in 2009.
As chief minister of Tamil Nadu, she had often criticised New Delhi for not taking the issue of alleged human rights violations by the Lankan army during the last leg of battle with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and has demanded an international probe into the issue.
She has often taken up the issue of Tamil fishermen, who mistakenly foray into Lankan waters and end up in the custody of Lankan army.
Her anti-Lankan stance also meant that Lankan players were not allowed to play in IPL matches held in Tamil Nadu last year.
