While paying his tribute to Gandhi, JKPCC Chief G A Mir said that Gandhi played a major role in getting freedom for the country.
Mir said that Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence, peace and brotherhood is becoming more relevant with every passing day as the entire world looks towards Mahatma Gandhi for guidance.
"The United nations had declared this day as International Non-Violence Day, recognising the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi for the world peace and communal harmony, as a way of peaceful co-existence", Mir said.
Mir also paid tributes to former Prime Minister Lal Bhadur Shastri and recalled his contributions and said that Shastri was symbol of honesty and simplicity.
"He was the man of high values and principles. His slogan of 'Jai Jawan Jai Kissan' reflected his statesmanship and the respect enjoyed by him in the hearts of countrymen", he said.
