Junior docs in Hyd launch indefinite fast against NMC bill

Intensifying their protest against the National Medical Commission (NMC) bill, some junior doctors here began an indefinite fast at the state-run Gandhi medical college and hospital Thursday.

"The provision to permit persons like paramedics to treat patients after giving them training for about six months to one year is highly objectionable as it hurts public health badly," the protesting doctors said.

The junior doctors also held a protest at the state-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) here.

As part of the protest, the junior doctors at the OGH alleged that the NMC bill sounded "death to modern medicine".

The bill is anti-poor and anti-students, they alleged.

As part of the protests, the junior doctors boycotted emergency services at Gandhi, Osmania and other state-run medical college hospitals from 2 PM Thursday.

Asked what will be the plan of action in the wake of the bill being passed in Rajya Sabha also, a leader of the junior doctors association said it would be based on IMA's decision as the protests are going on all over the country.
