Kanjurmarg dumping ground: MPCB told to check if compliance norms were being followed

The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to inspect the dumping ground in suburban Kanjurmarg to check whether the norms of solid waste management were being adhered to by the authorities concerned.
A bench of justices A S Oka and P N Deshmukh directed the MPCB to file a report on the same within two weeks.
The bench also asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) whether the capacity of the Kanjurmarg dumping ground could be increased to ensure that solid waste was not dumped anywhere in the city illegally.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by an NGO, alleging that the BMC was dumping untreated solid waste at the Kanjurmarg dumping ground.

The civic body, however, told the court that it was following all the norms while treating and disposing of about 3,000 metric tonnes of solid waste every day at the dumping ground.
