Karnal Singh, Special Director in the Enforcement Directorate (ED), was today given a six-month extension to hold additional charge of ED Chief.
This is the second extension for the senior IPS officer in the post which fell vacant after the government had in August last year curtailed the tenure of Rajan S Katoch, the previous ED Director.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension of additional charge of the post of Enforcement Director assigned to Singh, a 1984 batch IPS officer of Union territories cadre, for a further period of six months beyond Friday, or till appointment of a regular incumbent to that post, an order issued by Department of Personnel said.
Singh was on August 19, 2015 given the additional charge of the post for three months. In November, his tenure was extended by another three months, and it was to end on Friday.
Singh had been given charge of the agency at a time when it was being accused by BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy of not properly investigating the National Herald case. Swamy has been accusing Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul of money laundering in the case.
The agency has a mandate to enforce two of the most stringent laws in the country - Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) - to check black money and hawala trade cases.
