Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and the US general heading foreign troops in Afghanistan today discussed measures aimed at pressuring militants who threaten security along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier.
Gen Joseph Dunford, commander of the International Security Assistance Force, met Kayani in the garrison city of Rawalpindi as part of the "continuing effort to strengthen cooperation and regional stability", said a statement from the US Embassy.
The two military leaders "discussed a variety of issues related to strengthening cooperation and pressuring militants who threaten security along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border", the statement said.
"Today's meeting was part of an ongoing dialogue to address security challenges of mutual concern.
Communication and cooperation between ISAF, Pakistan and Afghanistan is critical for regional stability," Dunford said.
This was Dunford's second visit to Pakistan after taking over as commander of ISAF.
He congratulated Kayani and the Pakistani security forces for their contribution to the successful completion of the May 11 general election.
A separate statement issued by the media arm of the Pakistani military said the two generals "discussed issues related to border coordination along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border".
