The US Secretary of State John Kerry has ruled out lifting sanctions against Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Harakat-ul Jihad Islami (HUJI) which was designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation by his predecessor Hillary Clinton some six years ago.
Based upon a review of the Administrative Record and in consultation with the Attorney General and the Treasury Secretary, Kerry in a federal notification concluded that the "circumstances that were the basis for designating HuJI as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation have not changed".
As such it does not warrant a revocation of the designation, Kerry said in a statement dated July 20, which was published in the Federal Register today.
The statement does not give reasons for carrying out the review of foreign terrorist organisation designation of HuJI.
On August 6, 2010, the then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is now the Democratic presidential nominee, had slapped sanctions on HuJI and its leader Mohammad Ilyas Kashmir.
