After being on the run for nearly four months, the main accused in the murder of Dalit youth Gokulraj surrendered before the CB-CID office here today.
The case had further turned sensational after the alleged suicide of the DSP probing it.
Gokulraj had gone missing from a temple on June 23 and his body was discovered on the railway track near Pallipalayam in this district the next day.
On October 5, a court here had issued a arrest warrant against Yuvraj.
Yuvraj had reportedly given an interview to a Tamil news channel the previous day, daring police to nab him.
So far 20 persons have been arrested in connection with the murder, of whom five were detained under Goondas Act and five released on conditional bail.
The death of the 21-year old youth under suspicious circumstances had triggered protests by his family and Dalit groups, who had alleged it was a case of honour killing since he was in 'love' with a caste Hindu girl. They had staged demonstrations and demanded a CBI probe.
On September 18, DSP Vishnu Priya who was investigating the case allegedly committed suicide in her residence-cum office complex due to 'harassment' by her superiors, triggering demands by various political parties for a CBI probe into it.
On September 20, Crime Branch CID had taken over the probe into the alleged suicide of Vishnu Priya and the Gokulraj case.
The opposition demand for a CBI probe into her death was rejected by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa who had asserted that the CB-CID would handle the probe 'impartially'.
A former IAS officer P Sivakami had moved the Madras High court, seeking a direction to stay the CB-CID probe into the alleged suicide by DSP Vishupriya and connected murder case of Gokulraj and transfer them to CBI.
A Madurai-based advocate had also moved Madras HC, seeking transfer of the suicide case to CBI.The Madras HC had on September 23 dismissed as withdrawn a PIL filed by former DMK Minister Subbulaksmi Jagadeesan seeking a direction for a CBI probe into incident.
