The killing of a person in Assam's Sonitpur district allegedly by some unidentified people from Arunachal Pradesh sparked off a blockade today as locals set ablaze a vehicle from the neighbouring state on National Highway 15, a police official said.
One Kalu Orang and three others had gone to Behali Reserve Forest bordering Arunachal Pradesh to cut wood yesterday and did not return till this morning. The three others who returned, reported to police that Kalu was allegedly killed by people from Arunachal Pradesh, the official said.
Enraged at the incident, the locals of Behali today blocked National Highway 15 from Tezpur in the district to Arunachal Pradesh, the official said.
A vehicle bearing Arunachal Pradesh number plate was set ablaze after its four passengers were asked to come out, they said.
Police has rushed to the forest to recover Orang's body and also to Behali to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today asked his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Nabam Tuki to take up immediate steps for defusing tension along the inter-state border following the violent incident at Behali.
In a telephonic talk this morning, Gogoi asked Tuki to initiate necessary steps in right earnest to defuse the escalating tension and to bring the situation under control.
Assuring his government's help and cooperation, Gogoi said both the states must work in tandem to instill confidence among the people living along the inter-state boundary.
Gogoi asked Tuki to take immediate steps to nab the miscreants who triggered the incident.
Tuki assured his Assam counterpart that his government would take all possible steps to bring the situation under control and to apprehend the culprits behind the incident.
Meanwhile, Gogoi appealed to the people living along the inter-state border to exercise restraint and to maintain peace and tranquillity.
