Guwahati Commissioner of Police Mukesh Agarwal said the city police, in a major breakthrough, apprehended the kingpin Anil Chauhan and his accomplice Mamun Choudhury from Azara area of the city here.
Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Meghalaya police were looking for Chauhan for a long time, he said, adding the man was tracked in Guwahati during police investigation.
A country-made 9-mm pistol, a .32 revolver, five bullets, one magazine, four mobile hand sets and several bank ATM cards were recovered from their possession, he said.
On the smuggling of wild animals, Agarwal said Chauhan was involved in the illegal trade of gecko lizards and investigations were on to find out if he was involved in the smuggling of rhino horns and other animals.
Replying to queries, the CP said Chauhan has a very strong network and operated in a manner that he could not be directly linked to his crimes.
