West Bengal government has allotted to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) a 20 acre land at Rajarhat in the eastern fringes of the city for managing its solid waste, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said today.
The city, which produces around 4200 mt of solid waste daily, has been facing problem as the old dump site at Dhapa has hardly any space.
Chatterjee said the new space would help solve solid waste management problem of the city.
He said the KMC owns about 12,800 acre of wetland in East Kolkata and there had been a plan to use 450 acre of it for producing power and fertiliser from the waste dumped there.
However, the erstwhile Left Front ruled KMC had made the wetlands a Ramsar site meaning wetlands of international importance under Ramsar Convention.
Managing solid wastes of the city would have been much easier if the wetlands were not included in Ramsar sites, said Chatterjee who is also the state environment minister.
A meeting involving environmentalists and Ramsar Convention delegates in March on how to utilise the wasteland without violating the norms of Ramsar sites, he said.
