Lahiri carded two-over 73 and was lying 78th. Lahiri started in a flashy manner with birdies on first, second and fourth and suddenly at three-under through four holes, he was attracting a lot of attention.
Bogeys on seventh, 10th and 12th put him back to even par before a birdie on 15th had him back in red colours at under par. Then came the triple bogey, where he took a penalty and ended with a seven.
Spieth, clearly tired after all the media rounds in New York, shot three-over 74 and was in danger of missing the cut.
That's in huge variance to his two wins and two runner-up finishes in last four starts. Graeme McDowell and Matt Every started with five-under 66 each and were tied for the lead. Korean Bae Sangmoon carded 67 to be third.
