Landslide kills five in Aizwal, exposes 80 graves

Five persons were killed in a rain-triggered landslide in Mizoram's capital city Aizwal where roads got blocked, power supply was disrupted and two cemeteries were damaged which exposed more than 80 graves.
It was a pleasant day in the national capital with the mercury settling just one notch above normal and the relative humidity in the range of 44 and 84.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 35.6 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 26 degrees Celsius, a MeT official said.
Five persons, including a four-year-old girl, belonging to two families were killed when the landslide triggered by very heavy rains mowed down their houses in Tlungvel village yesterday in Aizwal.

The landslide triggered by heavy rains since Friday has created at least 20 roadblocks in Aizwal and work was on to unclog them, officials in the state said.
A number of electric poles were damaged causing power supply disruption and telecommunication lines were snapped in some places while mobile network was also disrupted in the state capital, the officials said.

The landslide also damaged two cemeteries and exposed more than 80 graves in Bungkawn and Khatla areas of the state capital. Ten houses in Aizawl district were completely destroyed, six houses had to be dismantled and 17 families evacuated, the officials said.

Light to moderate rainfall occurred at several places in south-western Bihar while heavy rainfall lashed one or two places in north-west, south-west and south-central parts.
Gaya received 19 mm of rainfall till evening while Patna received 6.0 mm. Purnea and Bhagalpur received no rainfall.
Purnea was the hottest place in the state recording the maximum temperature of 34.3 degreed Celsius while Patna recorded 33.9 degrees Celsius.
In its forecast for the next 24 hours for the state, the MeT department predicted Patna, Gaya and Bhagalpur will experience generally cloudy sky with light rain while Purnea may see generally cloudy sky with few spells of rain or thundershowers.

The maximum temperatures soared above normal levels at most places in Punjab and Haryana where the joint capital Chandigarh recorded a maximum of 35.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.
Weather is likely to remain dry in Haryana, while light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places in Punjab tomorrow.
