Lauryn Hill releases new track on eve of prison release

R&B star Lauryn Hill is celebrating her release from prison with a new single.
The former Fugees singer was jailed in Connecticut in July after pleading guilty to three charges of failing to file her tax returns between 2005 and 2007.
The singer, who is set to leave prison after completing her three-month sentence, is marking the occasion by releasing a new track, Consumerism, which will also feature on her upcoming album Letters From Exile, reported Billboard.
A message posted on her blog page explained the background to the track.
"Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in... I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it.

"I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens.
"I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it's level," it read.
Following her release, Hill will still have to spend a further three months under house arrest and nine months on supervised release.
