A lawyer representing some of the accused in 2G spectrum allocation scam case was today expelled from the membership of New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) and his chamber at Patiala House Courts complex was also sealed for his alleged abusive behaviour.
According to a press statement issued by NDBA, a general body meeting (GBM) was held today to discuss the issue of "abusing, threatening and unethical behaviour" of advocate Vijay Aggarwal who on March 1 had allegedly threatened a lawyer and also called some bouncers in the court premises.
"In accordance with the unanimous resolution of the GBM of NDBA, Vijay Aggarwal has been expelled from the membership of NDBA and chamber number 251 of Vijay Aggarwal has been sealed today," the statement said.
Aggarwal, on the other hand, denied all the allegations saying these are false and NDBA president Rajiv Jai "did not want him to oppose the bail application of his client Vicky Maggo on whom a kidnapping FIR have been registered by my client Varun Tutti.
"Initially, I was threatened not to appear in the case but when I appeared and the judge granted police custody remand of the client of Rajiv Jai and turned them out of the court room for creating ruckus, they tried to manhandle me after the proceedings were over. I ran to the judge's room and police was called."
The NDBA said that it has been unanimously resolved in the meeting that it would recommend to the Bar Council of Delhi to cancel his registration as an advocate.
According to the bar members, advocate Bipin Dubey, who is the treasurer of NDBA, is "receiving threatening phone calls from Vijay Aggarwal to withdraw the case registered against him".
Aggarwal and the bouncers had started beating the lawyers after they had exchanged heated arguments on March 1, the bar members had alleged.
NDBA Additional Secretary Tarun Rana said Aggarwal was issued show cause notice which he has not responded as yet.
However, Aggarwal said this "expulsion" is illegal and the NDBA president is "abusing his bar office position for the interest of his client and is dissuading me from discharging my professional duties".
