Two advocates deputed by the High Court Legal Service Authority visited the stone quarries in the area near Moodbidri where five children had drowned last month.
The advocates, Vikram Hegde and Prateek, first visited the quarry in which two sisters had drowned at Beluvai on July 20. They later visited the quarry at Doomachandavu where three other sisters had drowned on the same day.
After visiting a few other quarries yesterday, the team expressed surprise over the presence of quarries close to residential areas violating rules of the Mines and Geology Department. They also noted that there were no protective fencing to many of them.
Later addressing reporters, they said the authorities had failed to take action against quarries which had violated rules. All the quarries should be fenced and the unused ones should be closed. A report would be submitted to the High Court, they said.
The visit comes in the wake of the High Court direction to the State Mines Department to conduct a detailed study on all the quarries in the region.
