A team of personnel of Hindustan Petroleum (HP) today completed the transfer of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the ill-fated tanker that overturned killing two people on Saturday night in Chhatraput town in Odisha's Ganjam district.
The ten-member team of the oil company from Vishakhapatnam and Jatnai took around 19 hours to transfer around 18 tons of LPG to other containers. 'As soon as the process was completed, we opened the NH-16 and asked the Southco to restore power supply. Now there is no danger", said SP (Ganjam) Narsingh Bhol.
The LPG of the ill-fated tanker was shifted to three other containers through the pipe and the process was completed very carefully without any leakage, said a member of the technical team. The LPG laden containers had already left the place, he said.
NH-16 was blocked in the area, while power supply stopped to the town from Sunday noon, when the LPG-laden tanker overturned on NH-16 at Chhatrapur, about 30-km from here. Two persons, including a girl, were killed in the mishap.
"Initially, we assumed three persons had died under the tanker. But we only recovered two bodies, including that of a 21-year old girl, after the tanker was shifted from the mishap site through the crane," said a senior police officer.
The deceased were identified as Kiranabala Sahu (21) of Langaleswara and R.Ch Sahu (47) of Kanchuru, he said.
District administration had closed school and colleges in nearby areas and warned the people not to use fire as a precautionary measures. Fire personnel were sprinkling water for about 24-hours at the accident site to control possible gas leak.
