Meghalaya government has pressed 100 public transport vehicles into service in Khasi-Jaintia Hills to enable voters to reach their polling booths in view of the 36-hour bandh called by a militant outfit ahead of the state elections tomorrow.
The government is taking no chances and to ensure fair and peaceful elections to the 60-member state assembly, nearly 100 public transport vehicles would be pressed into service in the capital city and seven districts of Khasi- Jaintia Hills to enable voters reach their polling booths, officials said.
As many as 2,485 officials are on poll duty apart from 91 companies of central paramilitary forces, five state police battalions and BSF and CRPF which are already in station, Chief Election Officer P Naik said.
"I do not foresee violence in any part of the state. We have a record of conducting the elections in peaceful manner. We expect the same this year," he said.
Banned Khasi organisation Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council has called a 36-bandh from 6 PM today in Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.
