Maha rights panel brings 'Justice at the Door'

In a bid to provide justice to aggrieved people of the state, Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) is conducting a three-day programme for hearing of cases at divisional level only instead of calling them here.
Under 'Justice at the Door' programme, which also comprises sensitisation and public awareness about human rights, Chairperson of the Commission Justice S R Bannurmath has started conducting the hearing at all six divisions of the state.
"Yes, I conducted the first hearing in the month of May only in Kolhapur in which 88 cases were heard and I passed an order of compensation of 5 lakh rupees to a relative in a custodial death case," said Justice Bannurmath, a day ahead of his visit to Amravati to conduct the next round of public hearing.

He said on the first day, he will hear the cases followed by sensitisation program of public servants. On the third and final day, a public awareness programme will be conducted in which not only common people but also the students, NGOs, among others are invited. The functioning of the commission will be explained in the programme.
"Almost 70 to 80 per cent cases which land at our doorstep are not maintainable. So our prime objective is to make people aware of what we do and what we cannot," he added.
Bannurmath had a detailed meeting with the heads of all six divisions in April this year, in order to implement this concept of 'Justice at the Door'.

After Amravati, the state rights commission has decided to hold its next round of public hearing in Buldhana district.
MSHRC was established on 6 March 2001 as per International Covenants and Promotion of Human Rights Act 1992 with objective to keep a watch and inquire into the violation of human rights by the public servants.
