With government gearing up to launch its ambitious Clean India campaign on October 2, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Rajindar Sachar today demanded the Centre to maintain the grandeur and sobriety associated with Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary.
In a statement here, Sachar demanded the Centre to keep the celebrations for Gandhi's birth anniversary sober as practised every year, saying any tinkering with its grandeur and sobriety is "sacrilege".
Sachar, who is also the former president of People Union for Civil Liberties, said October 2 reminds one of the sacrifices and the morality in politics in relation to the fight for independence and this should not diluted due to government's emphasis on cleanliness.
"The programmes associated with the birthday must not be diluted by this so called fad of cleanliness day. Cleanliness has to be actually maintained and not by unnecessarily calling to duty all the government servants and make them go through the hypocrisy of arranged photo opportunity item," he said.
The Prime Minister's 'Clean India' campaign is a mass movement aimed at cleaning the country.
Modi will launch the programme on Gandhi's birth anniversary from India Gate.
