Major initiative to eradicate narcotic drugs menace in Mumbai

In a first of its kind initiative, Muslim intellectuals, religious scholars, social activists, cops, lawyers, NGOs and law makers came together on a common platform today in a bid to eradicate the menace of narcotic drugs from the metropolis.
Coinciding with Independence Day celebrations, the issue was deliberated at great length at an event organised by the Jamia Qadriya Ashrafiya and Sewa, besides others.
Those who attended it included Hazrat Maulana Syed Moin Miyan, Yusuf Abrahani, MHADA Chairman, Mumbadevi MLA Amin Patel, Iqbal Memon, Senior Police Inspector Narcotics Azad Maidan Suhas Gokhale and DCP Namdev Chavan, according to a release issued here today.

"There is evidence that the number of drug peddlers is very high in various minority-dominated areas. If we don't get serious now, we will be helpless to see our youngsters getting killed," Hazrat Maulana Syed Moin said.
Expressing serious concern over the issue, Abrahani said, "Drug addiction has become a challenge for Mumbaikars, especially for the minority community. Despite immense awareness and information about various drug peddling, it has only been increasing in the city."
Promising serious action against suppliers of narcotics, DCP Namdev Chavan said, "We have taken note of increasing narcotics peddling in the city and we have been trying our level best to fight it. Our approaches is a hard one and we promise that we will get tougher. With the co-operation of Mumbaikars, I assure you that we will try our best to make Mumbai a drug-free city."

"There are reports that people who have been trying to inform the police about drug peddling in their areas have been attacked by drug peddlers," Mumbadevi MLA Amin Patel said.
