A BJD member in Rajya Sabha today sought framing of a law to stop exploitation of tribal women who come to major metros to work as domestic helps.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Dilip Kumar Tirkey (BJD) said tribal women from Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh were migrating in significant numbers to metros like Delhi and Mumbai to work as domestic helps.
They were being exploited by placement agencies and agents who pay them less and use violence against those women who protest.
Tirkey made a forceful demand for framing of a tribal migrant labour protection law to prevent exploitation of these hapless women.
C P Narayanan (CPI-M) raised issues relating to difficulties faced by cooperative banks in Kerala, some of the rules prescribed for them had put them in severe problems.
Audit of accounts and approving them within 6 months was not possible for cooperative banks, he said and demanded that the timeline should be extended. He also wanted changes in the deposit taking rules saying these were detrimental to the interests of cooperative banks.
NABARD extends deposits to cooperative bank no more than 25 per cent of government capital only, Narayanan said and demanded that the conditions be amended to put cooperative banks on par with commercial banks.
Rajani Patil (Cong) said there was a need for a national sugarcane pricing policy as different yardsticks used by the Centre and the states have put the industry at a disadvantage.
Sugar mill owners have arrears of Rs 13,000 crore to pay to cane-growers owing to low prices and slump in demand, she said.
