West Bengal Chief Mamata Banerjee Thursday laid the foundation stone of the new Kanyashree university here in Nadia district.
The Kanyashree university would be only for women.
It has been named after the Kanyashree scheme, a conditional cash transfer scheme aiming at improving the status and well being of the girl child by incentivising schooling of teenage girls and delaying their marriages until the age of 18. It received the United Nations Public Service Award last year.
"Girls are the future of the society. They are a combination of Lakshmi and Saraswati. My best wishes to all of you. Kanyashree is now best in the world. Today we have laid the foundation stone of a new womens university. We have named it Kanyashree University," Banerjee said after laying the foundation stone here.
The Chief Minister also announced that a campus of Harichand-Guruchand University, the foundation stone of the which she would lay in Barasat on Friday, would be set up in Nadia district.
"Tomorrow I will lay the foundation stone of Harichand-Guruchand University at a function in Barasat. It will come up at Gaighata. A campus will come up at Krishnanagar," she added.
