A case has been registered against the accused Mangta Singh who is absconding, Circle officer Hariram Yadav said.
According to the complaint by the victim's family, the youth attempted to rape the 8-year-old girl, who belonged to the same community as him, in a sugarcane field in the village.
Upon hearing her cries, villagers nearby rushed to her rescue. The accused however escaped after threatening the girl.
The 8-year-old has been sent for medical examination. Security, meanwhile, has been tightened with extra police force deployed in the village to ease tensions.
The accused, identified as Monu, was arrested last evening in Miranpur Police station area.
Police said he had been absconding for over two years after the incident.
