A 30-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in a temple in Sukinda area of Odisha's Jajpur district after reportedly failing to invoke the blessing of the God to cure his chronic ailment.
The deceased, identified as Sridhar Malik from Jamira village in neighbouring Kendrapara district, allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of an arch of a Shiv temple near Sukinda late last night, police said.
Being informed by the priest of the temple this morning, police rushed to the spot and found Malik was hanging's body hanging, said Sudipto Kumar Sahu, Inspector-in-charge of Sukinda police station.
"Our first hand investigation shows that the deceased was married and was here in the temple for the last one and half months seeking the divine blessing for his cure. During his stay here, he was only taking bhog of the temple and water and nothing else," he said.
"While investigation is on, it appears to be a case of suicide. But, we are waiting for the post mortem report to arrive at a conclusion," said the police.
Malik was suffering from chronic stomach ailment for which he had been experiencing excruciating pain. His family had consulted many doctors and provided treatment to him but there was no cure. Desperate, Malik sought divine dispensation at the temple, family sources said.
