A police team intercepted the man in Chatta and recovered the pistol and 11 live cartridges from him last evening, the officer said.
He was identified as Ashwani Kumar, a resident of Langrial in R S Pura.
A case has been registered at Satwari police station.
"Further investigation into the case is going on," the officer said.
During preliminary inquiry, police came to know that he was involved in cases of attempt to murder and narcotics smuggling in R S Pura.
