A man has been arrested for misappropriation of Rs 11 lakh in demonetised currency notes and cooking up a snatching story in west Delhi, police said today.
Accused Amit Saini, who worked in a furniture shop in Kirti Nagar, was asked by his employer Rakesh Kumar to collect Rs 11 lakh from another furniture shop in Tilak Nagar on November 19, Vijay Kumar, DCP(west) said.
Later, Saini informed Kumar that when he was returning after receiving the amount four men on two bikes intercepted him near Tagore Garden Metro station and snatched the bag carrying the money.
During the course of investigation police questioned Amit who kept changing his version and tried misleading the police by presenting wrong information, he said.
CCTV footage installed near the spot were scanned and it was found that no such incident took place, the officer claimed.
The accused was then confronted with contradictions in his story and grilled further after which Saini broke down and admitted that the money was misappropriated by him, he said.
The officer added that the accused told police that he thought that due to demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes his employer would not report the matter to police as the amount was in scrapped notes.
