A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trying to kill a bar owner in central Delhi's Karol Bagh, police said Thursday.
The accused, identified as Piyush Kartaria, had ganged up with Honey, Vivek and Ankit to extort money from the complainant, they said.
On Sunday, one Rajeev Oberoi, who runs a beer bar at Paharganj, reported that he had been receiving extortion calls from an unknown person since past few days, police said.
He also mentioned that on Saturday someone fired two shots at him while he was driving his car. Thereafter, he got a call where a person allegedly threatened him to pay Rs 3 lakh or they will kill him, police said.
"During investigation, it was found that the number used to make the extortion calls belonged to an ice-cream seller who said that on the day of the incident, four men had come to his stall and one of them used his mobile phone to make a call," said Ajit Singla, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime).
They used the same modus operandi with three other ice-cream vendors. Police verified the CCTV footages and one Wagon-R car was identified by the hawker. The men were also identified.
"On Sunday, Piyush was apprehended from Gole Market, Delhi. He admitted to his involvement in the incident. He disclosed that his other associates were Honey, Vivek and Ankit. They had made the extortion calls and had also fired on the complainant on Saturday. Efforts were also made to arrest the remaining accused," said Singla.
