Deputy Police Commissioner Satpal Joshi said police in the evening had detained Kuldip Singh after a complaint by his wife Sukhwidner Kaur who alleged that her husband was beating their child.
The situation turned ugly when Kuldip's wife left the Verka police station telling the personnel not to release him, Joshi said.
Perturbed by the police's behaviour, Singh in the presence of staff at the police station slashed his neck with a sharp knife.
A profusely bleeding Kudip was immediately taken to the government hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the DCP said.
He said that a criminal case would be lodged against the the staff of the police station for their gross negligence that led to the incident.
