Man gets 7-year RI for suicide of wife over dowry

A local court today sentenced a man to seven years rigorous imprisonment for the death of his wife, who committed suicide following harassment over dowry in 2013.
Additional Sessions Judge Sujana Kalasikam convicted Gujjula Nagireddy (35), a resident of Potlapalli village near, for the death of his wife Gujjula Manjula (30), and ordered him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years.
However, five other accused, including Manjula's in- laws, were acquitted for want of evidence.
According to Additional Public Prosecutor Mahajabeen, Manjula tied the knot with Nagireddy on June 20, 2010. At the time of marriage, the parents of Manjula had given Rs 2 lakh cash and 8 'tolas' (around 92 gm) of gold as dowry.

One year later, Nagireddy started putting pressure on his wife to bring an additional dowry of Rs 1 lakh.
Unable to bear the physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws, Manjula consumed insecticide and committed suicide on September 18, 2013 at her husband's residence.
Based on a complaint by the father of the deceased, police registered a case and after investigation filed a chargesheet against Nagireddy and five others.
After examining as many as 12 witnesses, the Judge pronounced Nagireddy guilty under anti-dowry Section 498-A of IPC and some other sections.
