The herd comprising about 12 elephants was roaming the area under Sukuruli block of Raruan police station for last 10 days damaging standing paddy crops and thatched houses.
In their effort to save the crops and houses, people with the help of fire crackers, beating of drums and other methods had driven them away from the area yesterday.
However, the jumbos returned after some time and went on rampage during which one Aita Munda of Gharamabeda was trampled to death, forester, Singida, Saroj Panda said.
Irate people gheraoed the forestor and local inspector-in-charge, who rushed to the spot, for over five hours demanding measures to contain the elephant menace and payment of adequate compensation to the victim's family. The locals dispersed after district authorities promised to look into the matter on priority basis.
